Adam Armstrong is looking forward to his reunion with Rovers and Tony Mowbray at Molineux on Friday night as the new Championship season kicks off.
Armstrong spent three-and-a-half years at Ewood Park, initially joining on loan from Newcastle United in 2018 before making the move permanent that summer.
The forward went on to score 64 goals in 160 appearances in blue and white, earning the club’s Player of the Year prize in 2019/20.
He was snapped up by Southampton in the summer of 2021 and also had a spell on loan at West Brom before heading to Wolves earlier this year.
Armstrong scored twice in the second half of last season, despite Wolves’ struggles in the Premier League, and got on the scoresheet against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup last weekend.
As he aims to help the Midlands outfit make an immediate return to the top flight, the 29-year-old is grateful for his time in East Lancashire and Mowbray’s faith.
“Blackburn helped kick on my career,” he told Express & Star. “I signed there as a 21-year-old for Tony Mowbray who is now back there.
“He gave me that massive opportunity to play in the Championship, gave me the minutes and the confidence to get back to the Premier League with Southampton, and I can’t thank Tony and the club enough for that.
“It is an amazing club, I had some incredible memories there, and I am looking forward to playing them on Friday.
“I will have a chat with him before the game. He has helped me get where I am today, so it will be nice to see him but hopefully I will score a few against his team!”
Wolves are among the early promotion favourites, having brought in the likes of Raul Jimenez and Kieran Trippier this summer.
“It is going to be a tough league,” Armstrong added. “There are a lot of strong sides this year that are all going to be pushing for promotion, and with the extra play-off places it is going to be even tougher,” he said.
“I have told the lads who haven’t played here how tough it’s going to be and we’re going to need every person.
“We want to win every game and put pressure on ourselves to do that. We will take each game as it comes, there will be different challenges along the way.
“We have to stick together through the wins and the losses and try to go on a positive run to get back to the Premier League.”
