Tony Mowbray is continuing to assess his Blackburn Rovers squad but admitted changes will be made if they can't find a way to score more goals.

The Rovers head coach has been consistent that there won't be huge changes in the transfer market until he's assessed his options. That message was reiterated on Saturday after their opening pre-season game against Accrington Stanley.

A host of players were missing after a virus in the camp but Rovers again looked rather toothless, even if fitness was the primary objective. Having scored only 42 goals last season, Mowbray is well aware that is the area he has to improve upon.

He insisted that players will be bought and sold if he believes that's necessary to improve their fortunes at the top of the pitch.

"I hope to win lots of games with the team this year," Mowbray insisted.

"If this current squad can't find a way to win football matches by scoring enough goals, we need to roll it around and move some players in. As the last time I came, we did.

"The team towards the end of my tenure was a lot different from the team right at the start of my tenure. I hope that's what the journey is going to be to the point where we need to strengthen.

"We have the opportunity to do that, whether it be through just capital that we receive or capital we create from bringing up young players from the academy and finding that they can give us extra stuff on the pitch.

"Good players win your football matches. I don't sit here and think I'm some sort of genius coach who's going to do anything different, other than to inspire players, motivate them to find the best version of themselves.

"I work extremely hard, use the organisation and see if we can win football matches. Some of the games I watched last season, it looked as if the team was short on goals.

"I stand here now after this game, nil-nil. It’s maybe something that we need to try and address moving forward, but I do feel I need to give everybody an opportunity."

Mowbray played down links with Bournemouth striker Daniel Jebbison, despite the consistent speculation. He said that recruitment was ongoing but didn't suggest Rovers are close to a breakthrough.

"It's ten days in. It is going on. It's going on in the background," he said on recruitment.

"The first thing for me to do is assess the group of players we have, not come in week one and say, I want this one, this one and this one, and don't even know what we've got in the building.

"So I have to have days like today; it lets me run my eye over the players, the ones that I like, the ones that I think have the potential to be players that can help us.

"Some of them, I can talk to them about their futures and see what they think, because I know that this is what needs to improve."
