Former Rovers defender Greg Cunningham has landed his first managerial role six months on from his retirement from playing.
Cunningham has been named the new boss at Salthill Devon in Ireland ahead of the inaugural FAI National League campaign.
The 35-year-old spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Ewood Park from Cardiff City, making 10 appearances.
He is best known for his time at Preston North End - where he played 184 games across two spells - and also had stints at Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Galway among others.
“It's an exciting time for me to take this step into management, and I'm very grateful to the club for giving me this massive opportunity. It’s a challenge that I'm relishing,” said Cunningham.
“I was very lucky to have a great playing career and to be in the UK for so long. Finishing my career back here in Galway was great and now starting this new chapter in my life is exciting. It’s great to start this journey here in Galway.
“Hopefully, I can have success with this club. This new chapter in the League of Ireland set up has created a pathway for the underage teams to progress.
"They've had huge success at underage and junior level; now it's time to take that next step into the League of Ireland.”
The FAI National League launches this season featuring 15 founding clubs split across three groups. Cunningham’s new club are in Group 2 along with Letterkenny Rovers, Mayo FC, St Francis and TUD. The fully formatted competition will be rolled out in Spring 2027.
