Former Blackburn Rovers recruitment chief Stuart Harvey has taken on a new role in the Championship.

Harvey has joined Stoke City as technical director and will now report to sporting director Jonathan Walters.

The 45-year-old previously spent six years at Rovers, initially working within the Academy before heading up the recruitment team while Tony Mowbray was in charge.

He left in 2021 to join Sunderland, where he was part of promotions from League One and the Championship.

Harvey left the Stadium of Light by mutual consent last October and is now back in the Championship with the Potters.

A club statement read: “Stoke City have appointed Stuart Harvey as the club’s Technical Director.

“The 45-year-old will report to the Potters’ Sporting Director, Jonathan Walters, and support the broad spectrum of the club’s football operations including first team coaching and recruitment, research and analytics, football administration, medical and performance, women’s first team, and boys’ and girls’ Academies.

“Harvey recently served as Head of Player Recruitment at Sunderland, making a significant contribution in their rise from League One to the Premier League during four years at the Stadium of Light.

“Prior to his role on Wearside, which he departed in October, Harvey had worked in a lead position across Academy recruitment and later first team player identification and analysis during six years at Blackburn Rovers.”

Stoke finished 17th in the Championship last season, despite a strong start to the campaign under ex-Coventry boss Mark Robins.

Walters believes that Harvey’s appointment is an “important step” as the club aims to keep progressing.

“Stuart is a highly respected operator in the game, who most recently played a much-valued role in Sunderland’s journey to the Premier League,” Walters added.

“His knowledge and experience have been built across a number of clubs and environments throughout his career.

“Stuart has developed a strong reputation in the game and understands the standards and detail needed to help drive success.

“This appointment is another important step as we continue to strengthen the football club in all areas, and Stuart’s arrival shows the ambition and commitment to keep moving the club forward and give us the best possible platform to be successful on the pitch.”
