Morecambe’s sorry season ended on a dour note as the already condemned side were convincingly beaten by Robbie Savage’s Forest Green Rovers.
Holding their own in the opening exchanges, Morecambe were soon behind as Jili Buyabu grabbed the opener for the hosts just a quarter of an hour in, escaping the attention of his defenders to fire home a low driven effort.
A mere ten minutes later Forest Green doubled their lead through Kyle McAllister’s penalty, given after Raheem Conte had pushed Jayden Clarke in the back.
With nothing left to play for, Morecambe struggled to impose themselves. Limited to a few counters, they were helpless when Gabe Kircough finished off Forest Green’s third.
Melting under the Gloucestershire sun, Morecambe were typically careless in defence, leaving Ricardo Rees unmarked in the box as a cross floated in.
The substitute made no mistake with his header and would add a second just five minutes later, making his brace the 102nd and 103rd goal the visitors have conceded this season.
Savage’s men, already confirmed for the play-offs, made sure Myles Boney’s season would not end quietly. The keeper was forced into an excellent save just six minutes in, denying Tom Knowles inside the box despite the midfielder having the goal at his mercy.
Morecambe were kept quiet by Forest Green’s quality of pressing, but wasted arguably their best opportunity of the match when Gwion Edwards’ sold shot was deflected into the path of Paul Lewis, whose effort lacked conviction and comfortably kept out.
Daniel Ogwuru came close but Fiachra Pagel produced a strong save to deny the striker. Although it would have been little more than a consolation, if that.
Now entering the play-offs, Forest Green Rovers, the world's first fully vegan club, begin the most challenging period of their season on Wednesday when they take on Boreham Wood.
Morecambe meanwhile, arguably enter the most challenging one in their history.
