Morecambe's second consecutive relegation was confirmed after falling to Jermain Defoe's Woking FC in a 5-1 loss.

Defeat left Morecambe eight points from safety with two games to go, meaning the side will drop out of the National League and into the sixth tier.

Jim Bentley's side were in need of a strong start, but Woking delivered the first blow just twelve minutes in. Harry Beautyman beat the returning Jamal Blackman from the edge of the box after his first shot was blocked.

Kian Pennant came close to doubling Woking's lead mere minutes later, but his effort sailed just wide.

Morecambe attempted to claw their way back into the game, but Kyle Jameson could not muster a shot on target with his effort.

However, Morecambe came within an inch of levelling, hitting the bar from a corner. Keeper Will Jääskeläinen was forced into action again, this time saving Gwion Edwards' shot.

Woking subsequently put Morecambe in serious danger of the drop after Aaron Drewe scored an 'Olimpico' goal, his corner beating Blackman all too easily.

Morecambe managed to breathe life into the fixture, Jack Nolan's cross going straight in minutes before the break.

From then, Jim Bentley's men slowly fell apart. First, conceding the killer goal with just over twenty minutes to go as Fulham loanee Olly Sanderson weaved into space and fired past Blackman.

Goals from Sam Ashford and Sanderson in added time ensured Morecambe's year-long spell in the division would end on a particularly sour note.

With relegation rivals Eastleigh and Braintree both losing, there might be a real sense of what could have been on the day.

Instead, Morecambe fans have two more games with which to wrap themselves in existential dread, having been in League One only three years ago.
