CLITHEROE ended a poor run of form on Saturday with a convincing 4-0 win over Wythenshawe Town, securing their first league victory since November.
On the back of Tuesday’s FA Trophy defeat at Scunthorpe, Clitheroe turned their attention back to the league against a Wythenshawe side facing relegation.
The home side started on the front foot, with Jack Morris opening the scoring inside six minutes after a wonderful assist from Harry Scarborough.
Clitheroe doubled their lead in the 19th minute when Veron Parny’s effort was blocked off the line by Domaine Rouse, but the rebound fell kindly to Josh Briggs, who fired home from close range.
Wythenshawe’s best chance of the match fell to Jack Taylor, whose volleyed attempt was saved by Oliver Bellizia at full stretch in the 38th minute.
The Blues had the chance to make it three on the stroke of half time as Morris took the ball around Gregory Hall, but agonisingly sliced his effort wide of an open net.
Jack Morris atoned for his earlier miss with a wonderful goal in the 64th minute after a deflected Cameron Lancaster shot fell to the inform midfielder, whose first time effort curled in off the post and left Hall rooted to the spot.
With Clitheroe firmly in control, they continued to create chances, one of which fell to Danny Wilkins, whose shot from outside the box was tipped over the bar by Hall.
Scarborough thought he had added his name to the scoresheet in the 89th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The knockout blow was dealt in stoppage time as Ben Woods stepped over a free kick before the ball dipped over the wall into the bottom corner to make it 4-0.
This result has Sean McConville’s side returning to winning ways after a turbulent run of form. Next up, they travel to Bamber Bridge as they continue their Lancashire Challenge Trophy campaign.
