Rovers have paid tribute to former player Tony Field, who has sadly died.
Field enjoyed a prolific two-and-a-half-year spell at Ewood Park in the early 1970s, scoring 54 goals in 120 appearances.
The tribute read: “The thoughts of everyone at Blackburn Rovers are with Tony Field's family and friends following the passing of our former player.
“Signing from Southport in October 1971, Yorkshireman Tony made his debut for the club later that month in a home encounter with Mansfield Town in Division Three.
“That would be the first of 120 games he’d play for us during a two-and-a-half-year stay with us in East Lancashire, scoring 54 times, before he returned to his home county by signing for Sheffield United in March 1974, linking up with Ken Furphy, who was the man who brought him to Ewood.
“After his stint with the Blades, Field went on to embark on spells in America, playing under Furphy again at New York Cosmos, where he featured alongside legendary World Cup winners in the form of Pele, Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbauer, and Memphis Rogues.
“Rest in peace, Tony.”
Sheffield United also paid tribute to the former striker following the news of his passing.
They wrote: “All at Sheffield United are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Tony Field.
“Tony joined the club from Blackburn Rovers, signed by his former Ewood Park boss Ken Furphy in 1974, going on to make 75 full appearances, weighing in with 15 goals after making his debut in a 1-0 win over Manchester City at Maine Road.
“Tricky to mark and a good finisher, he wrote his name in '70s Blades folklore for his goal against Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town when he left four defenders standing as he weaved into the penalty area, a moment captured by the TV cameras. Departing in 1976, he joined the American soccer revolution after signing for New York Cosmos, where he counted both Franz Beckenbauer and Pele as teammates.
“The condolences and thoughts of all associated with Sheffield United are with Tony's family and friends at this sad time.”
