Blackburn Rovers' windfall delayed by Adam Wharton injury

The 21-year-old left Ewood Park 18 months ago in a club-record sale. Since, Wharton has shone in the Premier League and earned himself recognition on the international stage.

Wharton made his England debut ahead of Euro 2024 and was then included by Gareth Southgate, though he didn't play a minute in the Three Lions' run to the final.

Wharton hasn't been named in a senior squad by Lee Carsley or Thomas Tuchel since the Euros. He's been with the Under-21s and would've played in the summer Euros win had he not suffered a concussion in the final weeks of the season.

His performances for Palace earned him a recall by Tuchel for the September squad but he's been forced to withdraw again. Wharton is reportedly set for eight weeks on the sidelines due to a groin injury, which caused him issues last season.

As reported last year, The Lancashire Telegraph understands Rovers are due a 'significant payment' if/when Wharton makes his first competitive start for England. That could have come during this international break had it not been for this injury.

It's not known exactly what the monetary amount is but Rovers will benefit when Wharton's opportunity arises.

Crystal Palace boss, Oliver Glanser, had feared Wharton could be forced to withdraw after sustaining the injury during their 3-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday night.

“We had to pay the bill today with two muscle injuries,” Glasner said in his post-match press conference.

“Ismaila with a hamstring and Adam the adductor. Hopefully, it’s not too serious. We will make scans tomorrow so they can’t go to the national teams and then let’s see.

“But all the other (players) I think you could see the energy level today and it was no surprise for me because they are always doing this rhythm in regular weeks so it’s not unusual.”

AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been called up to replace Wharton in the squad.
