Goals from Alex Henderson and Kelsey Mooney sent Accrington Stanley into the second round of the Carabao Cup as they overcame League One Peterborough United 2-1.

Both struck in the first half with Henderson providing a goal and an assist before he came off injured.

The Reds, who beat Oldham in a preliminary round tie last week, are now in the hat for the next round with the Premier League teams not involved in European football coming into the competition.

Boss John Doolan made seven changes with Farrend Rawson, Devon Matthews, Freddie Sass and Logan Pye keeping their starting places from Saturday’s 2-0 League Two loss at Crewe Alexandra. Dan Martin returned after picking up an injury in pre-season.

Stanley took the lead after just 37 seconds when a Sass long throw was cleared to Henderson around 10 yards out and he fired the ball low into the net.

The Reds looked a threat and got the second on 25 minutes. Henderson’s cross found Kelsey Mooney at the near post and he tapped the ball over the line.

Harley Mills had the first shot for Posh on 32 minutes, with a free-kick from 30 yards which was narrowly wide of the post.

Henderson, with a goal and an assist, hobbled off injured on 40 minutes, replaced by Isaac Sinclair.

Posh dominated the possession but were struggling to test Ollie Wright.

The Reds started the second half on the attack with Rawson heading straight into the arms of Reyes.

Southampton loan keeper Wright had not had a lot to do but, on 54 minutes, he dived low to stop Gustav Lindgren’s shot creeping in.

On 58 minutes, Doolan made a triple substitution, bringing on Donald Love, Josh Woods and Liam Coyle.

Posh had the next chance on 66 minutes with a Mills free-kick deflected into the side-netting.

Stanley continued to press, putting some testing crosses into the visiting box.

However Peterborough did start piling on the pressure and they got one back on 79 minutes when Archie Collins headed home a Cian Hayes cross.

There were eight minutes of added time and it was the Reds who almost got a third with Josh Woods unable to connect with a Rawson flick on at the far post.

In the last minute, Woods was denied by keeper Reyes three times as Stanley secured a place in Round Two.

Stanley: Wright, Matthews, Rawson, Sass, Brown (Tunstall), Martin (Coyle), Conneely, Pye (Love), Henderson (Sinclair), Mooney, Popoola (J Woods). Subs not used: Rogerson, Caton.

Referee: Aaron Bannister.

Attendance: 847 (233 away).
