Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards was coy on details about a deal for Blackburn Rovers star Callum Brittain but admitted that the club is hopeful of adding more signings soon.
Rovers’ star defender is now expected to complete a move to Teesside after Boro came back to the table for his services this week. The club have been in talks over a fee and it’s likely that Rovers will sanction Brittain’s departure.
Hibernian right-back Lewis Miller is lined up to replace him. A deal was agreed on Thursday for the 24-year-old Australian to join the club.
Brittain is not expected to travel with Rovers on Saturday morning when they fly out for their final pre-season friendly against NEC Nijmegen. Despite that, Boro boss Edwards would not speak specifically about Brittain but admitted they’re looking to add in that position.
“I don’t like talking about other people’s players, I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” Edwards told BBC Radio Teesside on Thursday night.
“We are walking incredibly hard and I have maintained that for a number of weeks now. They are working hard to ensure we go into that first game in good shape and then beyond that too.
“There will be more action, I’m sure, after the Swansea game. I’m pretty sure we’ll be in a decent spot going into the first game against Swansea. There’s a lot of hard work going on.
“I understand people raising those points and I agree (that they need more recruits). My focus is also working with the players we have and they have worked really hard.
“There are a few areas we need to strengthen, the outsides of the pitch and in the middle too now. There are areas and we need numbers, too, to add competition. More quality is what we want going into a very challenging Championship season.
“I am not hiding from that; we want to challenge those who are here already. It needs to be competitive.”
