West Brom boss Ryan Mason is eyeing a fast start to the Championship season ahead of their opener against Rovers.

The 34-year-old took charge at the Hawthorns earlier this summer, stepping away from his coaching role at Tottenham Hotspur.

It is Mason’s first full time managerial position, although he had a couple of stints as interim boss at Spurs, and the ex-midfielder is keen to get points on the board early.

"Naturally, when you go into a new job and environment you want to get results and get people to believe in what you are trying to create," he told talkSPORT.

"The earlier you can get that, the better. We have got two home games in the first two games - including the cup.

“We understand the importance of these matches and hopefully we can start the season well to give us a good platform to kick on."

The Baggies finished in ninth place last term - two points behind Rovers and four off the play-off places.

When asked if he expects another tight season in the Championship, Mason replied: “I feel like it is always a difficult and tight league. It is exciting, you obviously need to start the season well and try to build up momentum.

“The reality is, if you look at the history of it, as long as you are within touching distance in the last couple of months then anything can happen.”

West Brom have brought in a few new faces ahead of the upcoming campaign but Mason hinted that their recruitment could stretch beyond the opening day.

"Obviously it's still relatively early days in terms of the transfer window. The season is a couple of weeks away and the window stays open after that,” he said.

"I think the most important thing is understanding what we need to be competitive for a long season. It is a tough season and it is relentless.

"We are still in the early stages of trying to build something. But the reality is it's a big club, big expectations. That’s what I want, that's what I need, I have had it my whole life.

"We are looking forward to it, everybody that is part of it, so hopefully we can start the season well."
