Colne were held to a goalless draw by Hurst Green in their fourth pre-season friendly at the Haffners Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Reds worked hard to create a series of chances but failed to find their scoring touch against a resolute visiting side.
Colne looked for an early goal in the opening minutes with Alberto Canache opening up the visitors’ defence with some good attacking runs on the left wing.
Jordyn Fitton also blasted a shot just wide from the edge of the area, while at the other end Jordan Monk saw his shot blocked by a defender in the Colne goalmouth.
Both teams fought hard to gain the upper hand and Colne came close to opening the scoring after 36 minutes when Jack Holt fired a 30-yard free-kick inches wide of the Hurst Green goal.
In Colne’s next attack, Jak McKinlay’s run ended as he was brought down inches outside the penalty area and Fitton’s free-kick brought a great save from visiting keeper Harry Smith.
Colne stepped up the pace in the second half and a free-kick to the far post was headed wide by Sam Holt after 56 minutes. But at the other end, Shak Ali needed to make a good clearance as a penetrating run by the visitors’ attack threatened the Colne goal.
The Reds created a series of promising attacks with Bobby Carter looking to cash in on some inviting crosses into visitors’ penalty area. But the Colne striker headed just wide after Jack Holt and McKinlay created the opening. Dominic Craig burst clear as he cut in from the left wing and fired a shot inches past the far post.
At the other end, the visitors came close with a break on the left wing and only a vital block by Sam Holt kept out the final shot at Colne’s near post.
But in the closing minutes, the Reds almost snatched victory as a dipping shot clipped the visitors’ bar with the keeper beaten.
