Blackburn Rovers' rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, have been charged by the EFL for multiple breaches of regulations after failing to pay their players for May.

The Owls could face a transfer ban for the next three windows or be restricted from spending any fees on players, as a result. This comes after breaching a 30-day window of default payments in the past 12 months.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has been sanctioned individually too, was late paying March's salaries as well as this month's. It's widely reported that the players have not been made and non-playing staff have been paid as little as £700 of their monthly wage.

As a result, The EFL have now stepped in and formally charged the club and the owner.

"Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations," a statement said.

"The owner of Sheffield Wednesday, Dejphon Chansiri, has also been charged with causing the Club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the Club.

"All charges relate to both the Ultimate Beneficial Owner and the Club failing to meet their obligations to pay players’ wages on time and in full in March and May 2025. The Club and Mr Chansiri have 14 days to respond to the charges."

Owner Chansiri has rejected two offers from a US consortium to buy Sheffield Wednesday in 2025. That's despite fan protests against his ownership and seemingly, an inability to pay wages on time.

Manager Danny Rohl has spoken on record that he'd like to leave the club despite being contracted for two more seasons. He's held talks with clubs in the Bundesliga but his sizeable compensation fee has left the club in limbo.
