Valerien Ismael says Rovers are “missing some profiles” he would like to have in the squad as the summer transfer window approaches.
Ismael, who took charge at Ewood Park in February following John Eustace’s departure, oversaw a strong finish to the campaign as Rovers took their play-off push to the final day but ultimately finished in seventh place, missing out by a couple of points.
Attention now turns to next season and Ismael is looking to strengthen the squad where possible, although he insists it is about finding the “right player” for what the club is trying to develop.
The Frenchman says there must be “stability” as Rovers aim to build on their positive performances in recent weeks.
“We know we have to do something,” he said. “It is clear because, as I say, we are missing some profiles I would like to have in the team. We will have the possibility to add that but we need that stability.
“The work we put already into the squad over the last three months, you want to keep it and not to start over again and over again. That is why this is our idea for the next season.”
Rovers brought in six fresh faces during the January window but five of those were free transfers or loan deals, with Augustus Kargbo the only player arriving for a fee.
Last summer, the likes of Yuki Ohashi, Todd Cantwell, Makhtar Gueye and Balazs Toth were recruited following the sale of Sam Szmodics to Ipswich.
When asked about the budget for this summer, Ismael replied: “The talk is ongoing behind the scenes. We know that we will be able to do some activity in the transfer market.
“As I say, it's not about to get the most expensive players. It's to get the right player for what we try to develop.”
The head coach was also quizzed about whether there are any plans to speak with the owners as preparations continue for next season.
“I think at some point we will get in touch to talk together,” he replied: “When it will be, I can't tell you. I expect it will happen.”
