Danny Rohl says Sheffield Wednesday’s tale of two halves at Ewood Park was a “mirror” of their season.
The Owls were two goals ahead at the break after Yan Valery and Djeidi Gassama struck, but Rovers hit back through Tyrhys Dolan and Yuki Ohashi to secure a point.
Rohl says his side were like a boxer after taking a big hit in the second half, although he couldn’t fault the “attitude” of his players.
“First half, except from the first chance they had we controlled the game and played really good football, very fast, good transition moments,” he told Football Heaven.
“We knew they would have a high rest defence and high last line. That is the reason we wanted to play with Gass (Djeidi Gassama) and Musa (Anthony Musaba) with speed.
“A good first half but 2-0 is always dangerous, one moment and the home team could be on. The first situation comes to the corner and we lose our men, not man marking.
“Then it was a tough game. You felt a little bit like boxer, you get a knock and try to stay but it was hard. I think when we take all of this game, maybe it is a mirror of our season.
“We have this and this, both are possible. But I must say the team invested and the right attitude was there, the mentality. It was not the feeling that we played for nothing, it was still the feeling that they wanted to win.”
Rohl cut a frustrated figure on the touchline after Ohashi’s equaliser as his side saw their winless run extended to four games.
“It starts higher up the pitch – how we start our press, we jump out of our shape, we lose the structure and are a little bit too hungry. Then, we overplay and there are players free,” he explained.
“This is consistently what you need to win games in the Championship. There are some moments where we can defend second balls and press better.
“If we do everything perfect week by week, we would have more points. But I must say as a group, we have good performances.
“I think individually, everyone could step up a bit more. We achieved 53 points last year and we still have five games to go, let’s try to have a good end to the season and win games.”
