John Eustace confirmed Blackburn Rovers' interest in Augustus Kargbo with a growing expectation he could sign before Monday's transfer deadline.
Rovers had a bid rejected for the Cesena forward last week and have been mulling over a renewed effort sign the 21-year-old. They have a long-standing interest in Kargbo having made a play for him in the summer too.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands that negotiations to sign Kargbo are moving in a positive direction. He is not in England, despite overseas reporting and would need to travel, have a medical and complete the necessary paperwork, including a visa.
Given the club's recent history in the January window, it will become clearer in the next 24 hours whether that deal will be done, given the timeline explained.

Eustace couldn't say much but did confirm Rovers were hopeful of signing a couple soon, with Kargbo a player of interest.
"No, obviously nobody's in at the moment. The club are working very hard to make sure we try and get a couple of good players in before the end of the window," Eustace said.
"They've said they're very close to getting a couple over the line, so unfortunately, it won't be for the game on Friday, but I know they're working very hard to try and get a couple of players in.
"They could be (from overseas). Yes (on Kargbo), I know the club like him a lot, so that's somebody that I think was highlighted in the summer. We'll just have to see if that materialises.
"Rudy, Adam Owen, Steve, Suhail, they're all working their socks off to try and get the players in. It's important that we have that line of communication and it's certainly been there for the last week or so."
Victory on Friday night would put them up to fifth in the Championship table. A position most would have baulked at had it been suggested in August.
A three-game losing run has led to frustration but that has been directed at board level, rather than at those on the pitch.
Eustace still believes that, despite the form, Rovers can rally and reiterated the importance of the supporters on Friday night.
"We've got that know-how. We're playing some fantastic football at times," Eustace said.
"We have to keep improving. We have to defend the box a bit better at times as well. You can see the progression.
"If we've got a full-fit squad, I'm sure that we could have had a really good January and finished Christmas very well. But we haven't. It's the Championship.
"Every team goes through a spell of not winning games. It's how they come through it. Different teams have bad form.
"They have injuries, suspensions. I don't think our form on the pitch has been bad. I think performances have been good enough certainly to take a few more points.
"The most important thing is we get everyone back as quickly as we can and we keep improving the squad. During the difficult moments, the fans stick by the team, which they have done up to now. It's a really good place to be."
