Blackburn Rovers hope to make a breakthrough in their pursuit of further additions to the squad this week, The Lancashire Telegraph understands.

So far, only Dion Sanderson and Adam Forshaw have been added to bolster John Eustace's squad. With injuries biting, Rovers' team is now weaker than at the start of the month whilst other rivals have strengthened.

A tough run of fixtures and the loss of key players have contributed to one win in nine league outings. That's seen Rovers drop out of the play-off places, albeit, they remain in an excellent position with 18 games left to go.

Therefore, all of the fan scrutiny has been directed to the board, with Eustace and the players retaining supporters' full backing. The familiar feeling of a head coach struggling without support in the transfer window has threatened to bubble over.

The Rovers board are understood to be acutely aware of the current fan feeling and sentiment. The club remain confident of adding to Eustace's squad with several players before Monday's 11pm deadline.

Rovers would like to have one or two fresh faces signed before Friday's Lancashire derby against Preston North End. It is clear that the whole club would benefit from a boost and injection of positivity and the club want to provide ahead of the Ewood Park clash.

Talks with possible targets are ongoing, though there is a concentrated effort for their activity to remain quiet; keeping their cards close to their chest.

A number nine and a left-winger remain high priorities whilst cover at left-back is also desired. Rovers have money in the pot and are willing to spend on fees, as illustrated by the rejected seven-figure bid for Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Augustus Kargbo remains a live target though they have yet to meet Cesena's asking price of around £1million. A first bid was rejected last week and Rovers are contemplating whether to push forward with the deal or pursue other targets. If Rovers agree to up their offer, a deal could be concluded pretty quickly.

But Rovers have seen first-hand that foreign imports often need a period of adaptation. Whereas Eustace has stressed the importance of Championship-ready players, that can make an instant impact on the second half of this season.

Other clubs have signed players of that ilk this week. Ali Al-Hamadi joined Stoke City from Ipswich Town whilst Hull City look set to win the race for Louie Barry.

It's understood that Rovers, like most of the Championship, were interested in the Aston Villa star. He was set to join Middlesbrough until a last-minute pivot and instead, he will spend the rest of this term in East Yorkshire.
