Burnley defender Hjamlar Ekdal was stretchered off during Sweden’s 2-1 defeat against Denmark.

Ekdal came on for the second half and had only been on the pitch for several minutes when he suffered a hamstring injury.

Sweden went on to lose the game 2-1, with Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen scoring a late winner.

Tottenham man Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had netted an early opener but it was quickly cancelled out by Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.

After the final whistle, manager Jon Dahl Tomasson told the press: “He suffered pain in his hamstring after a run, which made continuing to play impossible.

"We will do further investigations tomorrow, after which we will probably know more.

“I am extremely disappointed when players break up because I know how much he wants to play for Sweden.

“He was extremely disappointed. I was also very disappointed for him because he has trained very well.

“He comes from a tough spell at Burnley, where the last game he played was against Brighton. He hasn't played much this season so it's disappointing for Hjalmar.”

Ekdal arrived at Turf Moor from Djurgarden in January 2023 and made nine appearances last season as the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League.

It was the 25-year-old’s seventh senior cap in the international stage, having made his debut in 2022.
