Burnley defender Maxime Esteve has been named in the provisional France squad for this summer’s Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old joined the Clarets on loan from Montpellier in the January window and the deal has since been made permanent.

Esteve played 16 times in the Premier League as the Clarets were relegated under Vincent Kompany, who has now left Turf Moor to take charge at European giants Bayern Munich.

The defender has represented his country at Under-21 level and could now get the chance to compete at this summer’s Games in Paris.

Brazil claimed the gold medal in Tokyo four years ago after overcoming Spain in the final, while Mexico and Japan were semi-finalists.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry will take charge of the France squad this summer and Alexandre Lacazette, Michael Olise and Kean-Philippe Matete are among those who have been selected.

The Olympic Football Tournament runs from July 24 to August 9, which means Esteve could miss part of Burnley’s pre-season schedule and even the opening day of the Championship campaign.
