John Eustace believes Sunday's clash with Sheffield Wednesday is still “huge” despite the stunning victory at Leeds.

Rovers have a five-point cushion above the drop zone with three games still to play after Sam Szmodics’ late winner at Elland Road at the weekend.

The Owls find themselves 23rd in the table, a point from safety, as they prepare to travel to East Lancashire.

"It was always going to come down to the Sheffield Wednesday game,” said Eustace.

"If we had won on Wednesday, if we had won (at Leeds), it was always going to come down to that one.

“It is a huge game for us next week and that is what we are preparing for. We will be ready for it.

"With four games to go, we knew we needed to pick points up. Not many people thought we would win (at Leeds) but we believe in ourselves and what we are doing.

"To come and get a victory was outstanding. For the group, it gave us even more confidence - not that we needed it.

"For the fans, what a fantastic day to travel across from Blackburn. The support they showed us for 95 minutes was outstanding. I am very proud of the football club."

There were great scenes after the final whistle as the team celebrated what could prove to be a crucial three points.

It had been a challenging spell but Eustace hailed the togetherness in the squad for “sticking together” in the face of adversity.

"That is what it is all about, it is an emotional game,” the head coach continued. “Blackburn Rovers are a family and we want to be together, for the highs and the lows.

"Everyone needs to stick together, don't get negative about things. It is an emotional game but the only way you get success is by sticking together.

"We had a really rough time on Wednesday (at Bristol City) but I will tell you what, this group shows such togetherness. Everyone thought we would come here and lose and to defy that was brilliant."

There was plenty of pressure following the heavy defeat at Ashton Gate several days prior, but Rovers showed character in spades to withstand pressure against Leeds and return home with the victory.

"The character certainly has not been questioned since I have been here,” said Eustace. “We had a blip on Wednesday but 14 games since I have been here, the character has been outstanding.

"We came in on eight defeats in 11. We have turned that around and now we have three games to stick together and continue working in the right direction."
