Sam Szmodics says making his Ireland debut against Belgium was “one of the biggest days” of his career.

Szmodics was named in the starting line-up by interim boss John O’Shea and played 71 minutes before making way for Michael Johnston.

The Rovers forward nearly got an assist after slipping in Chiedozie Ogbene, who could only fire into the side netting. He also sent a strike over the bar from a tight angle on the stroke of half time.

The game finished goalless but Ireland could have won it, with Brighton striker Evan Ferguson seeing an early penalty saved by Matz Sels.

“It was a lot more tactical in terms of when to press and when to hold your position, but nothing I wasn’t used to," he told the press after the final whistle. "I really enjoyed it, it wasn’t a shock to me.

"I have been ready for this for three or four years since I got my passport and to finally do it is unbelievable, but also a big relief for me because it was one of the biggest days of my career. I hope I can wear the Ireland jersey a lot more.

"I had to go home in the past because I was injured and other things have happened, and you read stuff in the press that I don’t want to play for Ireland which is ridiculous because I was desperate to.

"The best way to shut people up is to show what you can do and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love playing for Ireland and I am excited now for the future to hopefully get many more caps.”

The 28-year-old was given a big reception from the Irish fans at the Aviva Stadium as he left the pitch.

"Every club I have been at, I have given my all - even if it wasn’t going well for me on the ball," Szmodics added.

"I work my socks off and try to help the team as much as I can. I think I helped on and off it tonight.

"I created a couple of chances, could have had an assist first half for a goal and obviously the shot second half got blocked.

"I didn’t want to come off. I know we are not playing for points but on another night we probably take three because we have created some good chances and defended brilliantly.

"It is a lot to take in. I thoroughly enjoyed it and when I go up and see my family tonight and reflect on it, it is such a big moment for me and such a big moment for them as well.

"I am just buzzing that they were there and buzzing to tick off my Ireland debut."
