Former Premier League referee Chris Foy has given his verdict on Kyle McFadzean’s red card against Plymouth.

The Rovers defender was sent off early in the second half during the 1-1 draw against Plymouth at Ewood Park after he was judged to have brought down Ryan Hardie.

As part of the ‘Behind the Whistle’ series on Sky Sports, it was chosen as one of the incidents Foy would analyse this week.

The former top flight official agreed that Andrew Kitchen made the right call to brandish the red card.

Foy said: "This clip is one which highlights the importance of being focused and making a positive decision, having taken into account a number of considerations, and results in Blackburn Rovers’ No 55 sent off for Denial of an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity (DOGSO).

"As Plymouth's No 9 advances away from Blackburn Rovers’ No 55 and moves directly towards goal, there is a risk that any foul will result in denying a goalscoring opportunity as he goes through on goal.

"Once Blackburn Rovers’ No 55 pulls the Plymouth player and impacts his progress, the referee shows no hesitation in coming across and correctly issuing a straight red card for DOGSO."

Rovers had taken an early lead through Sam Szmodics’ 27th goal of the campaign. The attacking midfielder has now found the net in each of his last four appearances.

Plymouth drew level through Morgan Whittaker 16 minutes from time. The youngster slotted home from close range after Hardie’s initial effort had been blocked.

The result leaves the sides 17th and 18th in the Championship respectively with a three-point cushion over the drop zone heading into the business end of the campaign.

McFadzean will now serve a one-match ban, which means he is unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Middlesbrough.
