Blackburn Rovers insist Jon Dahl Tomasson has not left the football club but The Lancashire Telegraph understands he could depart before Saturday's match against Stoke City.

Reports in the national media have claimed that the Danish head coach is set to leave the club. Tomasson has 16 months left to run on the three-year contract he signed in July 2022.

Rovers are currently 18th in the Championship table and on their worst run under his tenure after one win in 11 league matches. They have only collected five points from their last 33 available.

When contacted about the speculation, Rovers insisted that Tomasson has not resigned nor has he been sacked. At the time of writing, he is still Blackburn Rovers' head coach.

However, The Lancashire Telegraph understands he is likely to leave his post before Saturday's match against Stoke City. Whilst nothing is official, there is a growing feeling that the 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers may have been his last.

Talks between the club and Tomasson will continue over the next 48 hours to reach a resolution over the matter. It remains to be seen whether the Dane will offer to resign for a second time or if the club will be left with a decision to make.

On Saturday, Tomasson revealed that he offered his resignation at Ewood Park last summer after a 'hand grenade' with the financial picture at Rovers changing dramatically. The head coach insisted he'd walk away for free after the project changed due to Venky's issues in India.

The timing of that revelation seemed pertinent at the time and it's understood Tomasson's frustrations around the January transfer window have been the breaking point in the relationship with the hierarchy.

The head coach has repeatedly spoken about how the club's project is not what he signed up to. In truth, it's been perfectly clear he hasn't been happy with the change in budget and expectation to develop young players and stay in the division.

Rovers blocked the head coach from speaking to the media last Friday which was clearly stated as a 'club decision'. When asked on Saturday why that was, Tomasson toed the party line of 'no comment' but did hint 'you probably know why'.

When asked about the Duncan McGuire case, he told The Lancashire Telegraph to 'ask Steve (Waggott), Suhail (Pasha) and the board'. Rovers will discover whether the EFL have approved his registration on Thursday.

The mistake is the second administrative error for a January deadline day addition in the last 12 months after Lewis O'Brien's failed move in 2023.

Rovers confirmed in a club statement that the club would try and agree a pre-contact agreement with Orlando City for McGuire should the EFL refuse his registration at the board meeting.
