Jon Dahl Tomasson reckons the January transfer window is an “extremely important” one for Rovers.

Yasin Ayari and Ben Chrisene have already arrived on loan from Brighton and Aston Villa respectively, while skipper Lewis Travis will spend the remainder of the season at promotion hopefuls Ipswich.

Rovers’ financial restrictions were well documented in the summer following changes to tax laws in India.

Tomasson hopes the club can get further deals over the line in the coming weeks to bolster his squad but previously stated that the situation is “unclear”.

“Every time the window opens, it is an opportunity,” he said. “We should take that opportunity and bring players in.

“The players needs help and I can only say that this window is going to be extremely important for the club.

“Of course, the project changed totally in the summer. Now is a good opportunity to help the players.

“I am not at all complaining about the players we have, I am always complaining about the players we haven’t got.”

John Buckley is also back at Rovers after picking up a shoulder injury while on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The midfielder could feature for Rovers again this season, but he will be out of action for at least a couple of months.

“I was disappointed he went away in the summer. It was not my decision, I would rather have kept John,” Tomasson explained.

“It was a financial decision to get his wages off the bill, now he is back. John is a good lad but it will take months before he is back, which is disappointing.

“He got his operation and he will quite quickly be able to run, but no contact - just building up his physical load.

“That will probably make it easier to get back, even if you have been out for months. We are probably talking two or three months.”

One member of the Rovers squad who has certainly made his mark this season is top-scorer Sam Szmodics, who netted a hat trick against Cambridge.

The attacking midfielder was also on target in the recent games against Hull and Rotherham and is now up to 19 goals for the campaign.

“Since the summer, he has been extremely good and added those goals,” said the boss.

“We always knew he could score goals, but as a player who came in and wasn’t used to playing a lot of games at this level – he played a bit for Peterborough, but not seasons - the way he is scoring goals, the confidence he is playing with and the role he takes as one of the few senior players is quite incredible.

“It is great to also see Dom (Hyam) take the leadership.

“Sammie is great in the dressing room and he takes responsibility on the pitch, that is what you want as a coach. I have been extremely pleased with his performances for a long time.”
