Here's how The Lancashire Telegraph scored the players' performances, with a six representing par for the course.

Leopold Walhstedt - 6

Didn't have any saves of note to make, nor was he at fault for either goal. Two balls into the box but it was the defence that didn't clear their lines.

Callum Brittain - 6

Was guilty of giving the ball away, particularly first half. Delivered a lovely cross for Szmodics' third to even things out.

Hayden Carter - 6

Two assists for the Rovers defender. The first of which was a lovely pass into the pass of Szmodics, the second a far simpler ball for Sigurdsson to finish. Has to take his share of the responsibility for the first two goals.

Dom Hyam - 6

Balls into the box were again an issue for Rovers and Hyam will take responsibility as the leader of the defence. Kaikai caused both centre-backs problems.

Harry Pickering - 6

Should have won the header at the back post for Cambridge's second. That said the marking in the middle was poor. Great cross for Leonard to make it five.

Adam Wharton - 6

Tried to make things happen but was guilty of too many loose passes in the middle.

Jake Garrett - 7

Grew into the game and made some fantastic slide tackles. Made some good runs and played some clever passes. He's developed a lot on the ball in the last 12 months.

Sam Szmodics - 10

Where would they be without him? 19 for the season now and his first hat-trick for the club. Fantastic all-round performance, aside from the goals.

Andrew Moran - 6

Busy on the right side without being too heavily involved. Grew into the game second half.

Arnor Sigurdsson - 8

A very impressive second-half display. Set up the equaliser with a nice reverse pass for Szmodics. Then made sure of the win with a close-range finish and he could've had more too.

Semir Telalovic - 6

Ran the channels well and came deep quite often to link up. Didn't get a clear sight of goal which will be a frustration. Subbed at HT.

Substitutes:

Harry Leonard (Telalovic, 45') - 6

Missed a sitter and scored a header. A topsy-turvy half in front of goal!

Sondre Tronstad (Garrett, 58') - 7

Added some calmness when he came on and shut the back door.

Yasin Ayari (Wharton, 77') - N/A

A first sighting in a Rovers shirt. Played one particularly clever pass to release Brittain.

Rory Finneran (Szmodics, 90')

He is now Rovers' youngest-ever player. On for Szmodics in stoppage time.

Pat Gamble (Brittain, 90')

Also given a little taster in the last few minutes.

Unused substitutes: Hilton, Hill, Markanday, Ennis
