Blackburn Rovers have confirmed John Buckley has returned to the club after his loan spell as Sheffield Wednesday was cut short.

The midfielder is currently out with a shoulder injury which is expected to keep him on the sidelines until March. The 24-year-old underwent surgery last month to correct the issue sustained in the Owls' 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City.

Buckley returned to Brockhall last week as part of his rehabilitation and was pictured at Ewood Park on Saturday watching Rovers' 2-2 draw with Rotherham United.

The club have now confirmed his season-long loan has been brought to a premature end, though Rovers always had a recall clause in January.

When asked about Buckley's injury last month, Tomasson admitted he had sympathy with the situation, with the loan not going to plan for either club or the player.

"I feel really sorry for John, he wanted to go on loan to get minutes," Tomasson told The Lancashire Telegraph in December.

"He hasn't been able to get a lot of minutes. I would have rather kept John, he knows that, you know that.

"You have the financial situation where the club saved a bit of money because he went. John is going to be out for two and a half months probably.

"I am disappointed for him. It will take time. When a player goes on loan to get minutes, which he really wanted, it's been difficult for him. It's difficult for him and I feel sorry for him."

Before his injury, Buckley's minutes had dried up at Hillsborough under new boss Danny Rohl. He made 13 appearances in total, starting only five Championship matches, with only two of those since October.

The Owls head coach revealed an announcement was imminent regarding one unnamed loan player after their 3-1 win over Hull City on New Year's Day.

Wednesday are expected to be active in the transfer market and with Buckley injured and featuring sporadically, the decision has been made for him to go back to Rovers.
