Adam Wharton has signed a new five-year deal at Blackburn Rovers, extending his stay until 2028.

The talented midfielder was already tied down until 2027 but has added an extra year on his deal, signing improved terms. Wharton follows Sam Szmodics and Harry Pickering in signing fresh deals at Ewood Park in the last fortnight with Dom Hyam on the club's radar too.

Wharton broke through into the first-team last season under Jon Dahl Tomasson and has attracted interest from Premier League clubs. No formal offers were made in the summer but there remains plenty of speculation over his long-term future.

This new deal gives Rovers even further control over how long they can retain his services and how much they could get if a sale was necessary. Wharton is a boyhood Blackburn fan and his agency were praised by Gregg Broughton in the summer for the way they have conducted themselves.

On the new deal, Broughton said: “Over the last 12 months, Adam has worked so hard to make himself a starting XI player here at Blackburn Rovers.

“Jon has talked of Adam’s ‘Champions League quality’ in possession and we believe Adam is the English player with the highest potential outside the Premier League.

“Can we put on record our thanks for the continued support provided by Adam’s family and his representatives, who understand that potential can only be fulfilled with opportunity.

“In addition, these moments shouldn’t pass without recognising the huge amount of brilliant work put in by our Academy staff, past and present, to provide the pathway and development for Adam since he joined the club at the age of six.”
