Aynsley Pears will be out for three to four weeks with an ankle injury ruling him out of Blackburn Rovers games this week.

The Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper was taken off on the hour-mark against Leicester City with an ankle injury. Pears couldn't put any weight on the injury and was helped off by two medical staff.

It's little surprise then that he will miss both of Rovers' away matches this week, starting against Coventry City on Wednesday night. Jon Dahl Tomasson confirmed Pears is also set to miss the Cardiff City match after the international break but the injury is better than first feared.

Leopold Wahlstedt will get an opportunity to impress in his place, having made his Championship debut as a substitute against Leicester. The Swedish goalkeeper has made two Carabao Cup starts since joining in the summer but now gets his chance to play in the league.

"Aynsley will be out for 3 or 4 weeks, which is positive as we thought it would be longer," he said. "It's never good to have a player injured, but in the circumstances, it could have been worse.

"It's a good opportunity for Leo Wahlstedt to get his first league start. He's a player with potential, who needs to get used to a lot of things: a way of playing, a different country, different intensity, even as a keeper. But I'm looking forward to seeing him play.

"Football is about those moments, it's a crazy game. Sometimes it's about timing, getting a chance at the right time. I know all the players will help him, we have excellent team spirit within the squad."

Niall Ennis will travel with the group to Coventry despite only returning to full training on Monday. The striker has been out for six weeks with a knee injury sustained against Hull City in August.

Rovers have struggled to keep their summer signing from Plymouth Argyle fit and despite only having one training session, Tomasson will take the risk with Ennis due to their limited options in attack.

"[Niall] Ennis trained for first time with the group today," Tomasson explained. "Normally we wouldn’t bring him but he will travel to Coventry because we are stretched. I think he’s very happy with it, but a little surprised. He did really well before he got injured."

Semir Telalovic took a knock in training on Monday but is expected to be fit and will travel with the team. Otherwise, Tomasson has a similar squad available to him.

The Rovers head coach could rotate his squad for the second of three matches in the space of six days. After leaking goals in recent weeks, it would not be a surprise to see James Hill or Joe Rankin-Costello recalled to the team to freshen up Rovers' defence.
