Gregg Broughton stressed the importance of retaining Jon Dahl Tomasson to The Venky's after they cut Blackburn Rovers' budget in the summer.

The Rovers head coach has been vocal in his frustration at being limited in the transfer market after geopolitical issues in India. Tomasson has been outspoken about the 'goalposts being moved' and the club's ambition differing from his own.

Tomasson was informed of the changes in June alongside Broughton, with the wage bill slashed by 15 per cent. The club made four more signings in the summer but there was a month-long wait between their third and fourth addition.

Broughton revealed he spoke honestly with the owners and told them that they risked losing Tomasson due to the financial restrictions that were being implemented. He also insisted the Rovers head coach is committed to the project at Ewood Park.

"I was speaking with Jon five, six times per day," Broughton told The Lancashire Telegraph. "I was coming from the same position he was at.

"Luckily for me, I don't have to go before the press and answer those questions every single week, before and after games. In fact, a lot of people in my position don't come out and speak after the window has closed but I think it's really important to give honest transparent insight into how the window works. It's what supporters deserve, it's their football club.

"I will always do that post-window. I share the frustrations with Jon and I can understand why he was saying what he was saying.

"Jon is an ambitious guy, he has been there at the business end of football playing and winning Champions Leagues and titles across Europe. He wants to get there quickly, he wants to be there yesterday, not tomorrow.

"I am equally as ambitious. I want to work at the highest level as Jon has. We share that ambition but that hasn't changed here at Blackburn Rovers. We want to continually improve and be in a better position than last year. That hasn't changed from either of our points of view.

"I think the window has given us a squad that is able to do that. I have communicated very clearly with the owners after their decision was given to us in June. "

He added: "I said, by doing this, whilst I understand your hands are tied, you run the risk of losing and frustrating a very talented head coach. We must remember what Jon, the players and the club achieved last year.

"Highest finish in 10 years, longest cup run for 10 years, generated squad value by 40 per cent in terms of book value with how they have developed. Put a clear playing style in place for the club to follow.

"Financially, they added £2million in terms of TV revenue from cup prize money, ticket money. Jon has done everything we have asked as a head coach, as we expected him to. That's why we brought him in and we thought he was the right fit for the club.

"I made that very clear to the owners but they have restrictions they are working under right now and we have to work to that budget remit."
