Jon Dahl Tomasson admits his side’s 3-0 defeat at Plymouth was tough to take after creating several good opportunities in the final third.

Ryan Hedges had a big chance to put Rovers in front in the opening 10 minutes but failed to hit the target from 12 yards.

Finn Azaz got the opener after his strike deflected off a couple of bodies, while Ryan Hardie and Luke Cundle wrapped up the result after the break.

“We all know how important the first goal is,” said Tomasson after the final whistle. “We had good chances to score it and they got it out of a deflection.

“Of course, I am extremely disappointed with this result and I don’t think it was a fair scoreline if you look at the game. Until the 75th minute I was thinking, ‘How is it possible that we are not leading this game?’

“We played some great football but at the end of the day, it is about putting the ball in the goal. We had some good opportunities to do that.

“We know how difficult it can be to come here. I think they won 20 out of 23 games last season so it is a good record.

“To create that many opportunities in the final third was good, but of course we are extremely disappointed.

“When you have so many fans travelling down to Plymouth, it is disappointing we couldn’t give them the three points.”

Rovers had been ruthless in front of goal during their emphatic 8-0 victory at Harrogate in midweek but failed to make their chances count against the Pilgrims.

When asked what was behind their lack of ruthlessness on the day, Tomasson replied: “If I had a good answer, we would have probably got a goal!

“If you look at football in general, there is a reason why good goalscorers cost a lot of money. We see that every week in the Premier League.

“We should be disappointed not to get something out of this game, and it sounds crazy saying that after losing 3-0.”

The third goal came from an error by Aynsley Pears, who failed to clear his lines after rushing out of his box.

“The first goal was extremely unlucky, it was a deflection,” the Rovers boss continued. “We had Trav’s deflection and it hit the bar.

“It was one of those games, and of course the third goal was a mistake. But it is football and those mistakes happen.”
