Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton has been called up to the England Under-20 squad for their upcoming training camp.

The 19-year-old has previously represented his country at Under-19 level and will now link up with Joe Edwards’ squad on Monday.

Wharton missed most of pre-season through a combination of injury and illness but has managed to get back up to speed in recent weeks, starting Rovers’ last three league games.

The highly-rated midfielder made his senior debut in a cup tie against Hartlepool last August and went on to play 22 times at first-team level during the 2022/23 campaign.

Wharton has reportedly been attracting interest from the top flight over the summer, but Jon Dahl Tomasson remains confident that the youngster will remain at Ewood Park after tonight’s deadline.

“I have said it from day one, Adam has extremely high potential,” said the Rovers boss.

“On the ball, he is Champions League level. Off the ball, he is learning still. He has developed a lot and is a very good player.

“If I was another club, I would buy him immediately for a lot of money! But I think we should keep him at Rovers.”

He added: “I can’t imagine that the club will sell Adam. The amount would need to be really big, otherwise you don’t sell a player with that potential.

“If you want to sell him, I think it is clever to wait until he has played more games in the league and his price will be even higher.”
