Jon Dahl Tomasson is confident Adam Wharton will remain a Rovers player come the end of the transfer window.

The highly-rated youngster has reportedly been attracting interest from the top flight over the summer after impressing in the Championship.

Wharton missed most of pre-season but has managed to build up his sharpness in recent weeks, playing a key role against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Tomasson believes the midfielder has the potential to go a long way in the game if he can keep improving off the ball.

“I have said it from day one, Adam has extremely high potential,” the manager explained.

“On the ball, he is Champions League level. Off the ball, he is learning still. He has developed a lot and is a very good player.

“If I was another club, I would buy him immediately for a lot of money! But I think we should keep him at Rovers.”

The Dane says Wharton has matured as a player over the past year and insists a “really big” offer would be needed to lure him away from Ewood Park.

“I think he has very high potential, which is why we have invested a lot of time in Adam,” Tomasson continued.

“But football is not just on the ball, it is also defending. You only have the ball at your feet for maybe two-and-a-half or three minutes in each game.

“There are a lot of times you are without the ball as well, but he is working hard on that. He developed a lot last season and is more mature.”

He added: “I can’t imagine that the club will sell Adam. The amount would need to be really big, otherwise you don’t sell a player with that potential.

“If you want to sell him, I think it is clever to wait until he has played more games in the league and his price will be even higher.”

The Rovers boss remains hopeful the club can get more deals over the line before the window slams shut but admits there is uncertainty over how things will pan out on deadline day.

Tomasson is keen to further bolster his squad to cope with the physical demands of Championship football after a promising start to the campaign.

“I have spoken a lot about the transfer window already and, to be honest, I don’t know exactly what will happen,” he stated.

“It sounds crazy that a head coach doesn’t know what will happen but it is the truth, it is unclear. I have hope we can get players in, and hopefully we don’t need to get players out to get others in.

“I think we need all the bodies, it is a tough league and we already have very good players in the building.”
