Joe Rankin-Costello will miss Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash against Harrogate due to a hamstring problem.

The versatile full-back was forced off during the second half of the 1-0 victory at Watford over the weekend.

Rankin-Costello’s injury is not serious but he is also a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Plymouth before the international break.

Jon Dahl Tomasson also confirmed that Sam Gallagher will return to the starting line-up following a few cameos off the bench.

Leo Wahlstedt and Andy Moran are also set to start after joining from Odds BK and Brighton respectively.

Harry Pickering is back available after serving a one-match suspension following his red card against Hull City.

Jake Batty has returned to training but is not ready to play a part against the League Two outfit. Niall Ennis, Sam Barnes, Arnor Sigurdsson and Jack Vale all remain sidelined.

“Joe is injured,” said Tomasson. “It is not one that will take a really long time but he will not be able to play against Harrogate.

“Batty trained for the first time today and the game comes too early for him. Jack is still injured, Sam Barnes is getting his operation at the beginning of September.

“Niall, his knee is getting better but he is still not able to play. Of course, we have Harry Pickering who is coming back from suspension.

“It is great to get Sam Gallagher going, he has been injured and then became a dad. Now he can start his first game for a while.

“It will also be nice to see Moran start his first game and our new goalkeeper, who will also start.”

Rovers did well in the cups last season, racking up wins against Premier League opposition in West Ham and Leicester.

Tomasson is keen to have more joy in those competitions this season but admits it can be difficult when the squad is stretched.

“We will see a lot of change, for sure,” he continued. “I want to have a good cup run, I also want to develop players and keep others up to speed.

“There are also some positions where we are quite stretched where some players need to play again, so we must have that in mind.

“Those cup runs we had last season were great. They were great moments for the players, the staff and the fans.

“I want to create more of those moments – the upsets against West Ham and Leicester were some of the biggest moments last season.

“We need to do the right things against a Harrogate side who can always be dangerous.

“If you do the right things, play forward and use few touches, we will create a higher tempo than the opponent. It is a game I am looking forward to.”
