Jon Dahl Tomasson says this afternoon’s clash with Rotherham will be a good test for Rovers’ young squad.

Tomasson’s men have made a promising start to the new campaign, racking up wins against West Brom and Walsall.

The Rovers boss knows Rotherham will try to make life difficult for his side but is looking forward to seeing how they respond to the challenge.

“I think they are a good team and what they do, they do it extremely well,” he said. “They are good at playing second balls, ‘chaos football’ which I call it in a very positive way.

“They win second balls, put the ball into the box with a lot of crossing, transition moments and set-plays.

“That is something we really need to deal with, and I am looking forward to seeing how our young squad can cope with those moments.”

He added: “If a team is very good at winning second balls, it is important that we keep that first ball instead of just kicking it away.

“If not, it will come again and again. That is key to the game an attacking point of view, being able to keep the ball in the right places.”

Niall Ennis and Zak Gilsenan both impressed against Walsall in midweek, but Tomasson was tight-lipped about their chances of starting against the Millers.

“Both players did an excellent job against Walsall like Tyrhys Dolan and Harry Leonard did really well against West Brom,” he continued.

“When you get an opportunity, it is about catching the manager’s eye and then there will be more opportunities in the future.”

Tomasson made 11 changes against the Saddlers and admits it probably wasn’t something he would have done if the squad wasn’t stretched.

“All the players are good players and the young talents are great,” the manager explained. “It is about the players we don’t have.

“But you know how much I love the cup games and changing 11 players is a lot. I probably wouldn’t have done it if we weren’t really stretched with senior players.”
