CEO Steve Waggott has shed some light on Rovers’ financial situation amid funding restrictions in India.

Waggott admits that the new changes regarding foreign investment have put “pressure” on the club’s budget.

Despite these challenges, Waggott insists the owners have been “brilliant” in keeping the club in a stable position.

“There are funding restrictions from India,” he said. “There has been a bit of a purge, I think, from the government over there to overseas investment.

“We are obviously a recipient of money from the owners, the Venky’s. Throughout all the pressure of the restrictions, they have been brilliant.

“They have still managed to give me funding to meet all different statutory payments, as I call them.

“All wages have always been paid fully and on time, along with all the bonuses for the players. That keeps us in a very stable position. All taxes with HMRC are fully up to date."

He added: “I know there has been frustration among our fan base as to what happens next.

“But what happens next is when we get to another affordable point of bringing a player in, we will do so. We will try to keep the squad as competitive as possible.”

Waggott also revealed that the owners have paid the first three years of their recent five-year sponsorship deal up front to improve the finances ahead of the new campaign.

Niall Ennis, Sondre Tronstad and Arnor Sigurdsson arrived at Ewood Park on free transfers earlier this summer.

Waggott is confident that further signings will be made before the end of the window but admits there are also likely to be more outgoings.

“Obviously, the fans want to know if we are bringing in more players, quite rightly so,” he continued.

“As and when the budget permits me to do so, I have the support from the owners that we will be able to do further player trading.

“Some will have to go out, but some will be coming in and we will just restructure the squad.

“Jon Dahl (Tomasson) is fully aware of the situation and fully briefed on where we are. He understands the position of the owners. Obviously, I have got to keep him aligned with the club.

“He is a very ambitious, young head coach. He is very talented and will be sought after in the future, no doubt, so I have got to make sure that we give him the best support possible to maintain for at least the next two years of his contract.

“And who knows? We might be able to extend it further if he sees that the progress of the club is aligned with his ambitions.”
