Today marks one year since Vincent Kompany took charge at Turf Moor, but the Burnley boss insists he is just getting started.

The Belgian’s first season in the hot seat couldn’t have gone any better, clinching the Championship title and securing an immediate return to the top flight.

But Kompany isn’t resting on his laurels as the club prepares for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

“The 12 months have gone so quickly but this is still only the start,” he told the club website.

“Everything that’s happened over the last year, we learn from it and keep getting better. We don’t have time to stop and reflect.

“Our aim is still to keep taking Burnley Football Club forward by working harder than before.”

The squad is currently in Portugal for a training camp, and Kompany admits the situation is very different from 12 months ago when a complete overhaul took place.

The Clarets’ summer break ended last week, which caused a stir on social media, but the boss has explained the thinking behind their schedule.

“I think it’s normal for us,” he added. “We’ve had four weeks off and on top of that we had the winter break, which was a few weeks.

“I don’t see why we would work less because we have won the league. We have been looking forward to getting back, the time we have got with the players now is invaluable.

“We have a plan on how we want to be 100 per cent fit by the start of the season, but there is also a development side to this that is really important.”

A number of players arrived in East Lancashire during the January transfer window, including Lyle Foster, Michael Obafemi, Hjalmar Ekdal and Ameen Al-Dakhil.

“Players came in at different times and are wanting to get all the tools to compete for next season – to be part of the squad and play as well,” said Kompany.

“Last season was on the back of a relegation so for the first couple of months, there was a lot of uncertainty and players were still trying to know where they would fit.

“This season, it is easier in that every player knows what is expected of him. All they are doing now is trying to get better at the things we expect them to do, and this is a huge opportunity for them to showcase that.”

Burnley's full fixture list for the upcoming season will be released tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 9am.
