BURNLEY captain Steven Caldwell believes Kyle Lafferty will find the perfect striking mentor in Ally McCoist, should his £3million move to Rangers be sealed.

Many observers felt the towering striker's potential was not fulfilled at Turf Moor as he spent much of the last two seasons playing wide on the left.

His tally of four goals in 2006-07 was only bettered by one last season.

But Caldwell is confident the 20-year-old Northern Ireland international will flourish up front at Ibrox.

"Kyle will be learning from some of the best people in the game at Ibrox with Ally McCoist, Walter Smith and Kenny McDowall all there.

"As a striker there is nobody better equipped to help him out in the goal department than Coisty.

"He's the best qualified in the business to tell him how to put the ball in the back of the net as he was so good at it himself.

"A lot has been made of Kyle's scoring record although I'm sure the goals will definitely come in time.

"And, while it's not a given you can go anywhere and score, I'm sure he will come good at Rangers."

Although a deal, which could see attacking midfielder Alan Gow arrive at Turf Moor in exchange, is imminent, Lafferty remains a Burnley player until the contracts are signed.

But his anticipated departure has come as no surprise to Caldwell.

"For the past year there have been a whole host of clubs coming to Burnley's game to have a look at him," he said.

"They kept coming back so they all must think Kyle has something to offer and they must all think he can score goals.

"He actually has a bit of everything really. He's a big lad, but he will get a lot stronger because he's still only young.

"He's tall, good in the air, and also excellent on the deck.

"He does have a great touch, and in the time I've played with him, he has improved all the time.

"I think there is a lot more to come and he is going to the right place to learn."
