BURNLEY remain at loggerheads with Hearts over their valuation of left winger Andrew Driver, after having two bids turned down.

Clarets manager Owen Coyle has made no secret of his admiration of the Oldham-born star, but after being thwarted by the Scottish Premier League club for a second time last week, it is unclear what the next step will be.

Reports in a national newspaper yesterday suggested Driver had submitted a transfer request to the managerless side.

However, although I understand the 20-year-old is keen on a move to Turf Moor, a source close to the player has stressed that is not how he wishes to operate, now or in the future, in order for a deal to be struck.

So the two clubs must now be left to thrash out a deal if Burnley are to secure a player who was voted Hearts' young player of the season, and who came into the thoughts of England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce towards the end of last year.

But with Vladimir Romanov pulling the strings, that could be easier said than done.

Hearts' Russian owner has made a habit of setting his prices too high and is a tough negotiator.

Christophe Berra seems set to leave Tynecastle this summer, but both Rangers and Wolves have had bids, of £1million and £1.5m respectively, turned down as Romanov has valued the captain at £2m.

Hearts' search for a new manager could also slow any transfer process down, although that is expected to be resolved this week.

Despite a double knock-back, Coyle is still keen to do business for Driver.

"He is a player we're interested in," said the Burnley boss.

"He's an out-and-out left winger, who is 20 years of age and quick. I've been an admirer of his for years."

Coyle has yet to make his first permanent signing since taking charge in November last year and admitted the close-season knock-backs had proved to be a frustration but added: "I can understand clubs. I look at players and they have a valuation.

"Clubs have their valuation and we have ours, and we've got budgets to work within like any club."

Peruvian goalkeeper Diego Penny remains a target, but a work permit must be granted before a transfer from Coronel Bolognesi can be completed.
