Burnley achieved promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking last night following a 2-1 win away at Middlesbrough.

The Clarets saw their six-season stay in the Premier League come to an end last year following relegation but, in his first season at the club, manager Vincent Kompany has led them back to the top flight.

Despite a massive squad overhaul at the start of the season and a relatively slow start to the campaign, Burnley have looked like promotion contenders for much of the way and were promoted with seven games to spare – a record since the Championship was rebranded in 2004/05.

Following their promotion, fans, notable local people and even former players have taken to social media to send their congratulations to the club.

Bishop of Burnley Rt Rev. Philip North, said: “I am delighted to see Burnley promoted once again to the Premier League. My warmest congratulations to Vincent Kompany and all the players and staff at the club on the magnificent achievement of making such a speedy return to the Premier League.

“Since becoming Bishop of Burnley eight years ago, it has been my privilege to get to know the club and all it stands for really well.

“As a long-term football fan myself, I’m aware of the power of football to bring people together and bring genuine pride to a local area.

“Burnley is already a premier town and we can now look forward to having a Premier League football team once again.”

Clarets fan Dave Fishwick, founder of Bank on Dave, took to Twitter to send his congratulations to the club and to chairman Alan Pace.

He said: “Well done Burnley FC for getting promoted back into the Premier League! David H and his lucky scarf has done the trick this year!”

In a separate tweet, he added: “Well done to my friend @AlanPaceBFC for taking Burnley FC back into the Premier League!”

Oliver Ryan, Labour parliamentary candidate for Burnley and Padiham, said: “Get in! Congratulations Vincent Kompany and the lads from all of us at Burnley Labour, Premier League here we come!”

Lord Wajid Khan, former mayor of Burnley from 2020-21, said: “Congratulations on our Burnley for sealing promotion to the Premier League. Never have we won promotion in this manner. Well done Vincent Kompany and the team for their record-breaking efforts this season! Champions!”

Radio and TV presenter Jordan North, a Burnley fan, posted a video of the moment he found out the Clarets had secured promotion.

Finally, former Clarets captain Ben Mee, who left the club at the end of last season following a 10-year spell, simply said: “Congratulations @BurnleyOfficial. Fantastic achievement!”

With promotion now sealed, all eyes will be on Burnley securing the Championship title, and they will have the perfect opportunity to pull even further away at the top when they host second-place Sheffield United on Monday (April 10).

A win would put the Clarets 14 points clear with only six games left to play, meaning they could need only two more games to go up as champions.

After hosting the Blades, they have successive away trips to Reading and Rotherham United, host Queens Park Rangers, and then finish off with trips to local rivals Blackburn Rovers and then Bristol City.
