Jon Dahl Tomasson stressed it would be a big step-up for Harry Leonard should he be given his chance in the Championship in the remainder of the season.

Leonard will come under consideration for a spot on the bench at Huddersfield Town tomorrow with Bradley Dack out injured and Sorba Thomas unavailable to face his parent club.

The 19-year-old striker is yet to make his senior debut, nor feature on the bench in a Championship match, but has been on the fringes of the first-team in recent weeks.

Having featured in pre-season, Leonard has been training with the first-team squad ever since and has 18 goals in all competitions for the Under-21s.

Given Rovers’ struggles for goals, failing to score in each of their last two games, as well as a shortage of options, there are growing calls for Leonard to be included.

Jack Vale faces a race against time to be fit this season, leaving Sam Gallagher as the only senior striker who is fit and available.

Leonard was 19th man against Norwich City and joined in with the warm-up, and asked whether he could get his opportunity at Huddersfield, Tomasson said: “It’s a question.

“He was the extra man (against Norwich). He’s still a young boy and of course it’s a different level.

“When someone scores in the Under-21s everyone thinks ‘easy, he can play’ but this is the Championship, a difficult league, a tough league with very difficult opponents and (against Norwich) there were players playing in the Premier League last season.

“He’s a big talent for sure.”

Gallagher has struggled for impact in the last two matches, with just 43 touches across the two games since the international break.

The 27-year-old has shown willing, but never looked like adding to the seven goals he has scored this season.

Having played much of the early season out wide, Gallagher has got his chance to lead the line since January, playing 90 minutes in each of the last six Championship fixtures, with Rovers having failed to add another frontman in January.

“It’s always a combination but we were playing against a good side, you shouldn’t forget that,” Tomasson said of Rovers’ attacking output.

“Being a striker is probably the most difficult position on the pitch and I think he almost got onto a header in the first half, almost, and second half a couple of things so we of course need to connect in the last third for sure, but were still creating chances in that way.

“I think we came through at the sides quite well but we were lacking the last quality, the last pass.

“There was some good combinations, but I agree we didn’t create chances like our opponents didn’t in the first half, there were two or three moments where we could have been dangerous but we were lacking the right choices and in the second half I think we created a lot of opportunities, maybe could have had a penalty from the shot for Sammie (Szmodics) that hit the hand in the box.

“It could have been a penalty.”

Adam Wharton was one of the four substitutes used by Tomasson as Rovers chased a way back into the game.

The 19-year-old had played just three minutes of football in 2023, with his appearance against Norwich a first since New Year’s Day having first picked up an injury and then struggled to force his way back into Tomasson’s plans.

He played the final 20 minutes against the Canaries, and Tomasson said: “I think he did well, on the ball for sure, that’s Adam’s quality and why I brought him on the pitch because we were behind and we needed quality on the ball and he can give that.”
