Stanley winger Sean McConville has been handed a ban by the FA for abusing an official during the 2-0 defeat against Bolton in the Papa Johns Trophy semi-final.

McConville was shown a straight red card by referee Samuel Barrott for a high challenge on Liverpool loanee Conor Bradley during the first half.

Bolton ran out 2-0 winners at the Wham Stadium thanks to goals from Elias Kachunga and Aaron Morley to secure a Wembley final against Plymouth.

McConville has admitted using “abusive and insulting language” towards an official in the tunnel after the final whistle. He has also received a fine, with the sanctions imposed by an independent regulatory commission.

An official statement on the FA Spokesperson Twitter account read: “Accrington Stanley’s Sean McConville has been given a two-match ban and £750 fine following an incident that happened after their EFL Trophy game against Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday, February 22.

“The midfielder admitted that he used abusive and insulting language towards a match official in the tunnel after the final whistle, and an independent regulatory commission imposed his sanctions following a subsequent hearing.”

McConville has been a regular starter for the Reds this season, scoring five goals in 39 appearances in all competitions.

John Coleman's men are back in action tonight when they take on third-place Ipswich at Portman Road (7.45pm).

Stanley currently sit 20th in the table – two points above the drop zone despite having played at least one game fewer than the sides around them.

McConville will also serve a ban at the start of next season’s Papa Johns Trophy group stage as a result of his sending off against Bolton.
