Rovers are searching for their fourth head of recruitment in just two years.

Gus Williams was only appointed into the role in late July, having left his post as talent identification manager within the Wales Football Association.

Williams’ appointment was seen as something of a coup as he led a bolstered, new-look, recruitment set-up at the club, which includes a head of European scouting (Luke Griffin), head of UK scouting (Tom Sutton), head of data scouting (Lewis Evans) and head of emerging talent (Paul Aladejare).

But a little over seven months into the job, Williams is back with Wales FA who have hailed his return.

Rovers director of football Gregg Broughton, who oversees the recruitment department as one of his areas of focus, will now lead the search for Williams’ successor after his surprise departure was announced.

“We would like to put on record our thanks to Gus for his work behind the scenes at Blackburn Rovers," Broughton said.

“Over the last six months, he has had to rebuild a recruitment department, from covering the UK to now covering Europe and emerging talent, and to one that has systems dedicated to ensuring data is at the centre of all decisions.

“Gus’ work leaves a legacy for his successor to build on and Blackburn Rovers will gain the benefits of that in years to come.”

A club statement added: "Rovers’ search for a successor is now underway and the club will make a further announcement in due course."

John Park was in situ upon Broughton’s arrival in June, but left at the end of that month having opted against extending his contract given his loyalty to Tony Mowbray.

Park had only been in the job for a year, having previously worked closely with Mowbray at Hibernian and Celtic, and followed him out of the exit door when his contract expired.

Stuart Harvey was the man that Park replaced, having himself left for Sunderland in March 2021.

That means that Rovers are now searching for their fourth head of recruitment in two years, with the search for his successor set to get under way.

Williams will take up the position of national talent pathway manager at the FAW next month.

Noel Mooney, FAW CEO, said of the appointment: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Gus back to the FAW where he will continue his journey to find Cymru the best possible players.

“Gus has been a huge part of our success and he will once again be central to our future successes.”

Williams' new role will see him focus on projects 'to widen the player talent pool'.

Dr David Adams, Chief Football Officer, added: “We are delighted that Gus is returning to the FAW.

“He’s been part of our history in identifying young talented players and supporting their journey to our Cymru National Team.

“We must continue to work effectively within the professional game eco system to secure eligible Welsh football talent for the continued success of our national teams.

“Gus will play an important role in this endeavour.”
