Rovers are working to get at least one more signing through the door going into deadline day – as Jon Dahl Tomasson says the club will have to be creative to get deals done.

The hope is that the club could add to the signing of Sorba Thomas on Monday in a boost to Tomasson’s options.

The window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, a situation complicated by Rovers’ FA Cup fourth round replay with Birmingham City.

Rovers will face the Blues at St Andrew’s after Jordan James’ late goal ensured Saturday’s game at Ewood Park ended 2-2.

Tomasson is keen to strengthen further after Thomas’ addition, stressing: “We always need to strengthen the squad and then you have of course the circumstances and the biggest part is financial.

“We try and do it a bit clever, but you always need to strengthen, new blood, competition in the dressing room and you should never waste a window.”

The Lancashire Telegraph has been told however that links to Troyes striker Ike Ugbo are wide of the mark.

In response to playing on deadline day, Tomasson said he hopes Rovers’ business will be concluded in advance of that.

He added: “Hopefully we should have all our players in for that. We should never waste a window, we want to become better in the right direction.

“It’s a little bit out of my hands.

“I know people are working hard on it to solve it in a difficult January window, but of course we should always try to become better with either short-term or long-term signings depending on the options.”

Rovers have endured a frustrating window to date, with Thomas the one breakthrough after joining on loan from Huddersfield Town.

A striker is their priority in the final days of the window as they look to fill the void after the departure of George Hirst at the start of the month.

“We all know January can be a difficult window but on the other hand, we should always try to strengthen the squad,” Tomasson added.

“Of course in January, you can have different kinds of loan players, you can have a bit of a lottery. Players that haven’t played too much, players like Sorba Thomas who are a little different to those in the building who have played a lot of minutes already.

“We’re always trying to strengthen the squad, we don’t want to waste opportunities.”

Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion could be open to a European loan move for Rovers target Deniz Undav.

Under FIFA rules, clubs are only allowed to have eight players out on overseas loan deals.

Brighton had reached that limit earlier in the month, but the return of Aaron Connolly from his spell at Venezia has opened up a spot.

And that could be taken by Undav who Rovers have tracked for much of the month, but his signature has become increasingly unlikely as the deadline has approached.

The 26-year-old has played eight times for Brighton this season, but boss Roberto De Zerbi had previously given his blessing for the German attacker to get game-time under his belt out on loan.

However, Undav was brought on for the closing stages of Brighton’s win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Brighton’s sister club, Union Saint-Gilloise, who Undav joined from last year, had been linked with a reunion, athough their boss Karel Geraerts suggested earlier in the week he expected Undav to remain at the AMEX Stadium.

He said: “Deniz is not going to come back to us. He has been at Brighton for six months and he wants to take his chance there.

“Deniz wants to do everything to succeed at Brighton.”
