Rovers are playing the waiting game in the bid to make breakthroughs in the January transfer window.

The club are understood to have identified their targets and made contacts with their respective clubs, but are awaiting decisions before knowing which ones will fall in their favour.

Rovers held talks with a number of clubs about deals this month but are hoping to make progress in the third week of the of the window.

Talks have been held with Hibernian over central defender Ryan Porteous and the club are understood to have tabled a bid which is under consideration.

Hibs chief executive Ben Kensell has confirmed that the club will look to cash in Porteous this month to avoid losing him for free this summer after rejecting the offer of a new contract to stay at Easter Road.

However, the expectation is that Porteous will stick around until the weekend for the Edinburgh derby with Hearts in the Scottish Cup.

Competition for Porteous’ signature is said to be high, including from overseas clubs.

Rovers will hope that interest doesn’t scupper their plans, although Hibs will likely use that to draw out the best possible deal for them, with reports suggesting the club are in no rush to make a decision.

Serie A side Udinese continue to be linked with a move for the Scotland international defender, and a deal which could involve their sister club Watford is thought to be a concern.

Rovers’ main focus in the window will be in attack, particularly after seeing George Hirst recalled by parent club Leicester City and later loaned to League One side Ipswich Town.

Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt is a live target, although it is understood that he isn’t currently the No.1 option, with other deals in the works which have so far remained under the radar.

Rovers have been negotiating with the Elland Road club but given the 20-year-old’s current salary, any deal would be an expensive one to do.

Gelhardt could feature for Leeds in their FA Cup tie with Cardiff City tonight before a decision is taken on his future, with a host of Championship sides also involved in the scramble for his signature.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch said: “There's been some internal discussions and there'll likely be a decision in the coming weeks.”

“His attitude has been fantastic.”

Rovers are next in league action on Saturday when they face Bristol City, although that will be their final Championship fixture before the transfer window closes, with FA Cup action to come on the final weekend of the month.
