Vincent Kompany is confident his Burnley side can regain momentum as they prepare to head to QPR in their first match since the World Cup break.

Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Clarets prior to the break, climbing to the top of the Championship table and only losing twice along the way.

Kompany’s men even signed off with an emphatic 3-0 win against fierce rivals Blackburn Rovers at Turf Moor.

The Burnley boss admits it won’t be easy to pick up where they left off but hopes their squad depth will pay off in the coming weeks.

“I think that is the hardest part, when you finish with momentum, to pick it back up a month later,” he said.

“But I have no doubt that we will get back to having momentum. If it doesn't happen against QPR then it is a matter of time. The way this team works, we will have momentum again soon.

“The players know we have loads of competition and ultimately that is what I have wanted. In moments when other teams have maybe struggled, we have been able to rely on guys coming in.

“We have had a lot of players who have had to play an important part when others are missing. I think competition naturally sharpens you and I am hoping it will give us an advantage at some point.”

Kompany has now had time to reflect on the Blackburn victory and is delighted his side were able to “create memories” for the fans.

The Belgian is no stranger to big derby occasions, having witnessed first-hand the intense rivalry between Anderlecht and Standard Liege.

He added: “You do get big games as well in Belgium – your Clasicos, when the bus has to stay for another four hours inside the ground because fans are not letting you leave! It is also pressure you have to deal with.

“But in general, it is the build-up to the game. It starts from day one and then it just carries on and on until that moment.

“Being able to turn up on the day (against Rovers), it is something that I am sure has created a lot of memories.

“But I’m sure that every fan, we are already thinking about the next one and you realise there is another one coming, and we want to go and do the same again.

“But (it was) good. For now, it is done and we are just focusing on QPR.”

While the winter break has been unusual for Burnley fans, it is actually quite common in many countries across Europe.

When asked if he thinks introducing an annual break would benefit the English game, Kompany said: “It always depends, I think.

“It is a broader topic about game load and I am a big believer that as long as you have some sort of a quota on game load across a calendar year or season, you can put in as many fixtures as you want.

“You can put as many competitions, as many fixtures as you want as long as there is a quota on the amount of game time that one individual is allowed.

“The Christmas period has been one of the best periods to experience being a footballer, and being a footballer in England.

“But you do have to respect the rest of players, it is imperative. It is a damaging game, you can’t forget that.”
