Tyrhys Dolan scored twice as Rovers rounded off their week in Spain with an impressive performance in victory over Ajax at the Marbella Football Center.

Dolan scored twice in the second half to reward a positive performance from Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side with victory.

The attacker thumped home a second after a neat chip opened his, and Rovers’, account early in the second half.

It was another excellent exercise for Tomasson’s squad who backed up the 4-0 win over Hearts with victory over the Dutch side.

Dolan scored twice, Rovers kept another clean sheet, while John Buckley was in impressive form in the middle of the pitch to dictate much of the play.

The Rovers players who didn’t feature against Hearts started in a 4-3-3 formation, with the exception of Sam Gallagher, Jake Garrett and Jack Vale who are working their back to fitness.

Joe Rankin-Costello lined up as part of a midfield three, as Rovers switched to 4-3-3, having played with a back three against Hearts the previous day.

It was a bright start from Rovers who were having real joy down their left-hand side.

There was no surprise therefore that’s where Rovers’ first chance came from, Ben Brereton’s excellent first touch from a fine John Buckley pass took him clear of the last man, but from a tight angle he couldn’t get his shot on target.

Ajax then began to grow into the game to give Rovers the test out of possession they would have wanted.

Fabio Conceicao was the dangerman playing down the right flank, and he twisted his way beyond Harry Pickering to cross for Brian Brobbey who should have scored when firing over inside the six yard box.

Rovers on the break were a threat though, Brereton opting to try and square for Tyrhys Dolan from a similar position to his earlier chance when found by Adam Wharton.

Joe Rankin-Costello made a good interception at the other end to stop Devyne Rensch tapping in at the far post, while Aynsley Pears showed smart handling to repel a couple of dangerous crosses.

There was a blow for Rovers eight minutes before the break when Harry Pickering was forced off with an injury, as Tayo Edun, the only player to feature in both matches, came on in his place.

Level at the break, Rovers started the second half the stronger, with two sights inside the first eight minutes.

Callum Brittain exchanged passes with Dilan Markanday to get free of the Ajax defence, but hit the side netting with his shot from a tight angle.

In the 55th minute came the goal that Rovers had threatened. Tyrhys Dolan found acres of space, and when found by Buckley, he ran clear of the covering defender and then dink the ball over Maarten Stekelenburg.

Ajax, who made a change upfront at half time,  responded with Christian Rasmussen’s left foot shot that deflected just wide of the post.

Yet Rovers were firmly in control, with good options for the player on the ball which enabled them to keep it away from Ajax who made a raft of changes for the final quarter.

Markanday had a go from distance, which flew wide, as Rovers to assert their dominance further, but that would prove to be his last action as he was replaced by Harry Leonard.

A minute later Rovers doubled their lead, Dolan robbing Owen Wijndal of possession before his thumping effort flew beyond the ‘keeper who stood no chance.

Arjany Martha then almost pulled one back for Ajax, getting away with what looked like handball to control, but his low shot was kept out by a diving Pears save away to his right.

Pears also kept out Lorenzo Lucca’s low shot as he kept his clean sheet intact.

With eight minutes to play Dolan thought he had his hat-trick, turning in a low Brittain cross, only to see the linesman’s flag deny him.
