Ryan Hedges missed out on selection for the Wales World Cup squad to his, and Jon Dahl Tomasson’s, disappointment.

Hedges had been included in the provisional squad for Wales but missed out on inclusion in the final 26-man squad.

While the 27-year-old hasn’t been capped for three years, his form in Rovers’ excellent start to the season had put him in contention for a spot in the squad for the tournament in Qatar.

Tomasson had felt that Hedges’ versatility would make him a useful asset at the tournament, having featured in a number of positions for Rovers this season.

However, Wales boss Rob Page overlooked Hedges, who won the last of his three caps in 2019, when naming his final squad.

But Tomasson stressed that Hedges could have done no more in his quest to make the World Cup.

He said: “I know he will be disappointed.

“He dreamed about it, we spoke a lot about the World Cup, me and him, I’ve been there as a player and as a coach and I know how big it is.

“He’s done excellently for Rovers, a great job, and he couldn’t have done any more.

“It’s another person who makes that decision.”

Page has gone with experience, including plenty of the squad who helped Wales reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

Jonny Williams, of League Two side Swindon Town, has got the nod for what will be his third tournament, as it will be for Chris Gunter, also playing in League Two for AFC Wimbledon.

Joe Allen, who isn’t expected to play again for Swansea City before the World Cup, also makes the cut.

And Page said: “I’ve stayed loyal to the lads that have earned the right to be there.”

“The hardest part is disappointing the ones who aren’t there.

“There’s always going to be somebody who’s disappointed and I’ve had a couple of difficult conversations.

“That’s part of the job and we have to move forward and picked a squad that can compete moving forward.”

Wales get their competition under way on Monday, November 21 against USA. They then face Iran on Friday, November 25 before their final group game against England on Tuesday, November 29.
