Jon Dahl Tomasson says there is no panic at Rovers who will continue sticking to the plan they believe in.

Tomasson says he knew he was walking into a project that would take time, and says the demands being put on the squad have never been so high.

Defeat at Wigan Athletic in midweek, where Tomasson revealed his side made 31 unforced errors in the first half, means there has been an even share of wins and defeats from the 14 Championship games.

Tomasson says that inconsistency comes from the new project Rovers are embarking on, as well as the age of the team.

He feels adding experience to the team in the form of Dom Hyam is important in what Rovers are looking to build.

That comes after the summer departure of Darragh Lenihan to today’s opponents Middlesbrough, a player whose leadership was widely praised across the club last season.

Lewis Travis took over the captaincy from Lenihan in the summer, while Ben Brereton wore the armband in the closing stages of the Wigan defeat, with Rovers the second-youngest squad in the Championship.

“Of course we are a young team, but that’s why this is a project if you look at the team,” Tomasson told the Lancashire Telegraph when asked about leadership within the squad.

“I came from Malmo, a team that was used to winning, two league titles, playing Champions League, going through four qualifying rounds against champions of other countries, including Rangers, so I’ve been used to winning in that way.

“When I chose Blackburn I knew there would be less winning, because this is a difficult task, but it’s a very interesting project and I can come in and help the club create something a little bit different.

“We need to create something different to have a chance of going where we want to go and stay there.

“We can’t do what the rest of the league is doing because the chance would be almost zero of getting where we want.

“When you are building, and it’s a young side, you need a way of playing and over time you need to create value.

“One of the things you need in your team is experience and you can see Dom Hyam is an experienced player, he’s gone directly into the team and he’s taken charge of that role.

“When you have a young team, and a new team, there will be inconsistency, which is normal.

“We’re building, we have a plan and we don’t panic because we know exactly what we want to do.”

Tomasson is now four months into the job since replacing Tony Mowbray, who returns to Ewood Park next week with new club Sunderland.

He said of the response of the players: “The demands for those players have never been so high.

“That’s also something they have to deal and cope with.

“When they do that they will become better over time.

“That’s why I was happy with the way the Under-21s played against Wolfsburg, it was good to see because you can see with that group they have made steps already.”

Tomasson won two league titles in his time with Swedish side Malmo, and was also part of the backroom team within the Denmark national side that went 34 matches without defeat.

Of taking on the Rovers job, he said: “It’s always about winning and losing but I took this job because I could see it was an exciting project.

“I could see that I would lose more than I am used to because of the situation and the budgets and the group, but it’s very exciting that you can build something together with our Rovers fans, something special, a direction.

“I like that and think that’s exciting.”

He added: “The inconsistency of the team is normal, I’m not over the moon when we win, I’m not in the basement when we lose games, because I think it’s quite normal that this young team will be like this, I’ve said it many times.

“But those last two away games should have been draws and we need to do that better.”
