Wigan boss Leam Richardson believes his side’s positive approach paid off in their 1-0 win against Rovers.

Everton loanee Nathan Broadhead got the decisive goal, prodding home just beyond the hour mark after Thomas Kaminski had initially saved from Will Keane.

Rovers’ best chance fell to Ben Brereton but the Chile international failed to test Ben Amos in the Wigan goal.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men have now lost their last three matches on the road, failing to build on Saturday’s convincing win against Rotherham United.

Richardson felt his side tried to get on the front foot from the off and reckons they were worthy of the three points in the end.

The Wigan chief told Sky Sports: “We know they are a good counter-pressing, counter-attacking team so it was important we didn’t give it away in the middle of the pitch.

“But also we were strong when we needed to be. We set out to attack all night and I thought the lads worked hard for the result.”

He added: “We thought at one point these nights would never come back to the DW. Now under the lights, local derby against Blackburn, with our fans and their fans full of voice, players giving it their all.

“I thought we played well enough to fall the right side of the result tonight.”

The result sees Rovers remain seventh in the Championship table, missing a chance to close the gap on some of the sides above them.

Meanwhile, Richardson’s side are up to ninth as they aim to build on last season’s promotion from League One.

Rovers are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they make the trip to managerless Middlesbrough (KO 3pm).
